What are Activities of Daily Life?

The activities of daily living are largely uniform across the board, regardless of an individual’s personal demographic.  Sometimes shortened to the acronym of ADLs, these activities include everything from bathing to dressing, personal hygiene, using the bathroom and additional daily living support.

We know exactly what needs to be done to support these activities in terms of functional tasks, unique levels of assistance and more.  If you are even slightly interested in receiving daily needs assistance, learning how to write an independent living plan or performing self care and independent living skills, our team is here to help.

Basic Tasks of ADLs

ADLs are centered on personal hygiene, dressing, eating, mobility and maintaining continence.  Examples of ADLs include:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Oral care
  • Grooming
  • Nail care
  • Assistance getting dressed
  • Helping seniors eat
  • Assistance using the bathroom
  • Getting out of bed

ADL services also facilitate the patient’s movement throughout the home and general basic activity throughout the day.

Why are ADLS and IADLS Important?

ADLs are important as a senior’s ability to function in the context of daily living and ultimately caring for him or herself make a considerable impact on quality of life.  The sad truth is plenty of elderly individuals are dealing with personal hygiene challenges, malnutrition, isolation and other daily challenges that can be easily addressed by ADLs and IADLs.

Do I need an ADL Checklist?

If you are a senior, have fallen ill or are dealing with forgetfulness, it will help to create a printable caregiver daily checklist template and reference it on a daily basis.  An ADL checklist reminds you and your caregiver of the absolute must-dos day-in, day-out.

If you struggle to remember to complete the items on this checklist or forget to do so, take our independent living skills quiz and independent living questionnaire to determine if adl can improve your life.  We have all the information you need pertaining to adl compliance, the Katz index of ADL/ Katz adl scale and more.  Reach out to our home care specialists today to find out more about adl health and to coordinate adl support services.
